Tahmid Hossain Ansari

Dr. Tahmid Hossain Ansari is a distinguished rice researcher specializing in rice pathology. Since November 1994, he has served at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) in the position of Chief Scientific Officer and Head, Plant Pathology Division. He has experience in rice research and production in both standard and stress environments including the implementation of integrated pest management (IPM) or integrated disease management (IDM) in field conditions.

Dr. Ansari started his academic journey with a B.Sc. Ag. (Hons.) in 1987 from Bangladesh Agricultural University, followed by an M.Sc. in Plant Pathology. He also completed an MS in Bio-resources Science from Kochi University and PhD in Agro-environmental Science from the UGAS, Ehime University, Japan. His expertise covers rice disease resistance breeding, pathogen population structure, and disease management as well as rice physiology.

During his career, he has developed rice blast-resistant varieties including a genetic pool with blast-resistance Pi9 and Pita2 genes. He also developed a “vapor-induced seed germination technique” for cold environments and created a device for resource-poor farmers. He contributed to formulating integrated management strategies for different rice diseases including software-based rice solution/rice doctor apps. Dr. Ansari has played pivotal roles in the development of national policies including pest risk analysis for rice in Bangladesh.

Dr. Ansari has published books, reports, and scientific articles in national and international journals covering rice disease resistance, disease management, yield loss estimation following a linear regression model, rice spikelet differentiation and degeneration, etc.
