About The Course

Various forms of pollution impact the environment, climate, and health globally. Pollution prevention and management allow industries to reduce their energy and material inputs and offer nature-friendly products. Consequently, the productivity of industry improves and the overall well-being of people and the environment is enhanced.

Over decades of industrialization, the earth was assumed to be an unlimited sink, and the developmental model was based on dumping untreated industrial waste into the environment. The results are now visible as the world enters the “era of global boiling” (UN, 2023). Industrial activities and rapid urbanization have intensified air pollution, water contamination, and soil degradation due to inadequate waste management. Globally, billions of tons of waste are generated annually, much of which ends up in landfills or is illegally dumped, threatening ecosystems and human health.

Within the APO Green Productivity (GP) framework, this course provides a systematic overview of environmental pollution prevention and industrial waste management, covering scientific, technical, and policy perspectives. It aims to enhance understanding of the importance of air pollution control technologies, water treatment and purification, industrial waste recycling, energy recovery, and circular economy practices.

The main objectives of this course are to:

  • Understand major causes and impacts of environmental pollution.
  • Learn about international frameworks and regional practices of waste management.
  • Examine policy, technological, and educational approaches to pollution prevention and waste reduction for sustainable development.
  • Enhance understanding of GP concepts and principles for pollution prevention and management.

This e-learning course will cover the following modules:

Module 1: Introduction and Orientation
Module 2: Air Pollution: Sources, Impacts, and Control
This module focuses on air pollution and looks at its sources, impacts on people and the environment, and control measures.
Module 3: Water Pollution: Treatment Technologies and Best Practices
This module focuses on water pollution, treatment technologies, and best practices for safe water use and management.
Module 4: Soil Pollution: Agricultural Impacts and Remediation Methods
This module addresses soil pollution and examines its impacts on agriculture and effective remediation methods.
Module 5: Industrial Waste
This module deals with industrial waste and the circular economy. It discusses policies, practices, and innovations to reduce waste and promote recycling.

Important Notes:

  1. Participants who register to take this course and pass the final examination with a score of 70% or higher will be eligible to receive the APO certificate. Please note that the final examination can be taken only once. Therefore, the most appropriate time to take the examination should be chosen carefully. The self-assessment quizzes are for personal evaluation only and are not related to the final examination results.
  2. Participants who perform well in this course and receive the APO certificate will be given preference, on a merit basis, for selection to attend follow-up face-to-face multicountry APO projects on similar topics, when nominated by their NPOs and if slots are available.
  3. Notes 1 and 2 are applicable only to participants from APO member countries. Participants from nonmember countries are welcome to take the course for self-improvement, although they will not have an opportunity to attend the follow-up face-to-face multicountry APO projects.
  4. Each module is in a prerecorded video format in which the expert delivers presentations by explaining each slide. Participants can access the video by clicking on the link provided under the title of each module.
